Power UP! STEM Camps

Power UP! STEM Camps

The Green Initiative environmental club at Westwood Community High School is offering the Power Up Alternative Energy STEM Camp program at no cost to students in the Fort McMurray community. Power Up is student-designed and student-run, packed with interactivity and fun. We are looking for students in grades 4 to 9 that have a keen interest in energy and environmental science. Students will explore waste reduction, power generation, traditional energy, alternative energy and photosynthesis, using tablets, sensors, solar panels, virtual reality, and more. There will also be prize giveaways of portable solar phone chargers and VR headsets!

The dates for our first year's STEM camps are:

May 11th & June 8th (grades 4-6)

May 18th & June 15th (grades 7-9)

The location is Westwood Community High School, 221 Tundra Drive. Space is limited for each camp date, so registration must be done as soon as possible on-line at https://forms.gle/7wE5Pmj3zC2qrxYE9 and there are still spots open. Students from both FMPSD and FMCSD schools are welcome!

Here's a tentative schedule:
8:30 am to 9:00 am - registration
9:00 am to 9:30 am - trivia challenge
9:30 am to 12:00 pm - rotating stations with snack breaks
12:00 pm to 12:30 pm - bring-your-own bagged lunch
12:30 pm to 2:20 pm - rotating stations with snack breaks
2:20 pm to 3:00 pm - racing competition, wrap-up and feedback

Light snacks are provided by us, but students must bring a bagged lunch. More STEM camps are planned for the fall and spring over the next 2 years. Power Up is funded by Samsung Solve for Tomorrow, ConocoPhillips Canada, Husky Energy and the Government of Alberta.
