COURSE REGISTRATION GUIDELINES

Westwood High School strives to create a schedule that meets the needs of all students by maximizing the resources available for educational instruction. Students at Westwood are expected to carry a full course load throughout their three years of high school and it is important that we adhere to the following guidelines:

Grade 10 Course load will be 8 full courses*

Grade 11 Course load will be 8 full courses*

Grade 12 Course load will be 7 full courses*

*These do not include courses that are before or after school

Program selection should be based on a student’s current achievement, capabilities, interests, goals, and teacher recommendations.

Students are advised to select courses carefully as the school schedule is ultimately based on students’ registration requests. Course changes require counsellor and administrator approval and will be considered in extraordinary circumstances only.

COURSE OFFERINGS AND AVAILABILITY

Students are advised to select courses carefully as the school schedule is ultimately based on students’ registration requests. On occasion, the number of students selecting or being able to fit in a particular course into their timetable is limited. When choosing complementary courses, students are asked to rank five courses in order of preference in the event that not all first choices are available. Choices are considered on a first-come basis, so registering as soon as possible increases the possibility of having a place in courses of choice.

In general, students will take courses at their grade level. Students may apply to take courses above their grade level providing they meet the following criteria:

a. They have chosen it in their initial course selection

b. There is space available in the course

c. The program or course desired supports the student’s learning goals and plans
